Where Roberto is a doer with a thorough touch, Alfredo is the optimistic number-cruncher. Both, however, are proud family men whose own fathers instilled in them a resilience that has buoyed them during the toughest of times. It’s this trait that allowed them to see the potential in something like WorkHub in 2015 and to try their luck bringing it to life.

Where did the idea of WorkHub come from?

AS ALL GOOD THINGS DO, IT ALL STARTED WITH A NEED

Roberto had been steadily growing his returnable plastic packaging company from scratch since 2001. He first dipped his foot in the real estate development business when, hoping to build some warehouses, Roberto took a gamble and bought an acre of land in Houston. Day after day, he visited the site, watching closely and learning from the construction process.

He sold the six warehouses and bought a bigger plot of land – he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with it just yet, but he knew it was the right move.

Alfredo was also in town. Though he'd long worked as a financial planner and founder of a successful marketing agency, Alfredo now found himself heading one of the six paper and cardboard box factories left to him by his dad after his passing in 2009. Established in 1985, the factories were multinational but Alfredo wanted to lead them from Houston, an important commercial hub. To do that, he needed a space to work.  

A mutual friend of Roberto and Alfredo’s was the U.S. sales representative of a transnational fried snack company and also needed space for his product. Balking at the high cost of an individual office, the three entrepreneurs met and decided to split the rent on a larger shared space. Soon, however, samples of cardboard boxes, glossy packages and bags of orange puffed wheat overflowed from every corner.

They needed a warehouse for their products. But the warehouses nearby were too big and too expensive for their three respective operations. Roberto suddenly realized what he could do with his plot of land. He could create the affordable, flexible warehouses they’d been looking for all this time.

He invited Alfredo to co-invest, and WorkHub was born.
